Neuromodulators are cosmetic injectables that relax facial muscles to accomplish multiple aesthetic and anti-aging goals. The primary use of these injectables is to smooth dynamic wrinkles on the upper half of the face, which form as a result of repetitive expressions.
Every time you squint, raise or furrow your eyebrows, frown, or laugh, your muscles contract, which forces your skin into different positions. Over time, the skin responds to the natural aging process, and its foundation weakens due to reduced collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production.
Topical products can help soften dynamic wrinkles in the upper half of the face, but none can deliver the results that neuromodulators like BOTOX® and DYSPORT® can. The two cosmetic neuromodulators use an active ingredient called botulinum toxin A to block communication between the brain and muscles so that they no longer contract. Both products deliver long lasting, yet temporary results, normally 3-4 months. Follow-up treatments are necessary to maintain the desired long term effect.
BOTOX® is the most well-known cosmetic injectable used to treat cosmetic concerns for over 20 years. This wrinkle-relaxing injectable can eliminate the expression lines that form on the upper half of the face as a result of genetic predisposition or the natural aging process. It contains botulinum toxin A and is administered with a very fine needle directly into the muscles responsible for creating visible expression lines in the skin.
We can use BOTOX® to treat mild, moderate, or deep expression lines between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and at the outer corners of the eyes. This injectable can meet the needs of men and women who want to achieve a well-rested and refreshed appearance. BOTOX® also has some medical uses and can alleviate the symptoms associated with muscular-related conditions that cause pain or discomfort.
After you undergo treatment, you can expect your results to become visible within the first few days. It can take three to seven days to see a noticeable improvement in your expression lines. Your results will continue to improve during the first 30 days post-treatment.
Most patients can enjoy results for three to four months post-treatment. Patients whose bodies take longer to metabolize the product may even enjoy results longer, closer to six months. After your initial round of injections, you’ll get a better idea of how quickly your body metabolizes the product and can schedule your follow-up treatments accordingly.
DYSPORT® is another neuromodulator that works on the muscular level to smooth expression lines by relaxing specific muscle groups in the face. It also contains botulinum toxin A and can meet the needs of men and women who want to avoid looking angry or unapproachable because of their expression lines. It’s administered similarly to BOTOX®, and we can apply a pre-treatment numbing cream if needed to promote patient comfort during treatment.
DYSPORT® is specifically designed to treat frown lines that form between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar lines. These lines can make you look older or angrier than you are, but with the right treatment plan, we can use DYSPORT® to smooth these expression lines and help you feel more confident in your appearance.
It typically takes two to five days for DYSPORT® to begin working. Your frown lines will soften as it relaxes the muscles, and your best results will be visible within 30 days of your treatment.
Like BOTOX®, DYSPORT® results can last anywhere from three to six months, but on average, patients need to schedule maintenance treatments every three to four months to maintain their frown line-free results.
You won’t have to plan around downtime after your treatment, but you will need to follow some aftercare instructions. You must temporarily discontinue using blood-thinning supplements and medications to prevent post-treatment bruising. You’ll also need to avoid anything that increases your body temperature, including strenuous workouts, saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and even hot yoga. After your appointment, you must keep your head elevated for the first few hours to prevent product migration and avoid touching or putting any pressure on the treatment areas.
Most patients only need one initial treatment to achieve their desired results, and then we’ll schedule follow-up treatments every few months.
